Joseph Lamsin - Jewels of the Sea

Mathew Joseph Lamsin is a jeweller I come across a lot during recent years in Western Cornwall and has become a highly efficient and successful designer in the past 5 years, each piece having a similar theme and technique yet achieving a completely unique and completely different appearance. Not one of his collections of rings, necklaces or earrings is the same. Lamsin’s designs as truly unique and one of a kind and that’s what makes the piece stand out for me, making each individual piece all the more special and valuable (in the sentiment and the physical sense).
His ranges consists of three main collections; Marazion, Sennon and Newlyn, all places that have inspired him from childhood and still continues to do so. Mathew had a passion for drawing and making things from a young age, and having always lived in Cornwall with the beach as his playground, the sea has always been the major source of his inspiration. The coastal environment and lifestyle brought form Mathew’s outlook on life to which I can relate to as I find most of my work has, in one way or another, been influenced by since a young age. When Mathew decided to set up his own jewellery brand he wanted to express these feelings through the jewellery, in the hope that other people could connect with emotion behind it.
The technique behind his launched collections consist heating 18ct gold and sterling silver to molten and, alternatively to creating moulds, he pours in to sea water collected from the three places named to create organic, natural water like textures and shapes. Each design is purposely designed to imitate water ‘in action’, to express the embodied liveliness and energetic vibrancy of the sea. And with the fascinating rarity and uniqueness of each of his designs, I find even more disheartening that his jewellery is all the more expensive and is unaffordable to such potential customers as me.
